Got a Email from Kirt Enright... The Utah DNR Biologist regarding my questions about the chances of tagging a Spike Elk out of the Grouse Creek Area. He basically stated that it would be a miracle if one is taken out of the area. Kirt mentioned that there were TWO spikes last year and if they survived the winter they would be young branched bulls and not elligible for the Spike Elk tag hunt.

If a calf survived the winter and the Coyotes and all there could be a spike or two this year but they would be hunkered down in one of the CWMU units which are off limits to the Spike hunting. Kinda a let down since this is the first year over the counter Spike tags and hunting would be possible in the area... perhaps it would be a good camping trip anyway.

I have heard there are going to be 20 cow Elk tags available for the general public to take animals off of one of the CMWU's if you are interested.

Yeah.... I saw those... you have to apply between June 1st and June 25th on the DWR website... its actually a Drawing.

There are Five Permits for Antlerless Elk in the Grouse Creek Public Area.

There are 20 Permits on Double Cone CWMU with Boyd
There are 6 Permits on Grouse Creek CWMU with Shorty
There are 4 Permits on Twin Peaks CWMU with Milt

Not Guaranteed permits... got to get lucky and you have to have someone help you... especially if your a Disabled Hunter like myself.

I did get a Spike Tag for grins and giggles but I doubt I will see anthing.... I hope to get the Disabled Hunter Extenstions again for the Elk and the Deer this year so The Hunts will cross over each other for a good week so I can shoot a Spike Elk or a Buck Deer without the crowds of hunters roaming around. I have someone to assist me for that week... never know... I could get LUCKY :)

The Spike Elk Hunt was a Bust this year... didn't even see an Elk and I really looked... Seems that they really really liked Boyd Warr's Alfalfa Fields and those there didn't want to leave or the public ones enjoyed the Nevada weather better than Utah.

I talked with Kirt Enright at the Deer Checking Station as the DWR took their measurements on the Bucks we tagged and he said nobody that he knew of tagged a Spike Elk in the Grouse Creek Area. He did say the CWMU's faired well... Have to wait and see what the Success rates the DWR posts in the spring.
