Summer Solstice

Postby ASmith on Wed Mar 12, 2008 9:37 am

This year the Summer Solstice (6/21/2008) will be on a Saturday. Because it is on a Saturday, I thought it would be fun to make a special event out of it. For those that don't know, the Sun Tunnels are concrete pipes located by Lucin, Utah in the west desert that have been arranged so that 2 of the pipes will be aligned during the summer solstice.

Here are some ideas for events:

1 - Camping at the Sun Tunnels - Please do not camp on the west side where the sun sets. This will ruin the photo opportunieis.

2 - Explore Pilot Mountain - For those with ATV's, Motorcycles or 4 Wheel Drives with high clearance, we will be taking a trip to Pilot Mountain to explore the area. There are numerous mines and a DWR fishery with Lohanton Trout in the area.

3 - Geocaching - For those wth GPS devices, there are numerous Geo Cache locations around the Lucin and Devil's Playground area. If you go to www.geocaching.com and put 84313 as the ZIP Code, you will get a list of the geocaches in the area. I may even hide additional caches with prizes just for the event.

4 - Trap Shooting - Since we are out in the desert, we can get away from the crowd and shoot some clay pigeons.

5 - Trebuchet Contest - Contest to see who can build a trebuchet that will launch a tennis ball. The following are links with plans and instructions on how to build a trebuchet. Prizes for the trebuchet that can launch a tennis ball the furthest and a prize for the most accurate launch. (Possibly flaming tennis balls after dark)

7 - Sunset - At just past 9:00 PM (sunset), the sun will line up directly in the middle of the 2 tunnels facing east to west. After the sun sets, a bonfire will be constructed in the area between the 4 tunnels.

Because of the nature of the activities, I am not responsible for the following.

Food, water, gas, tents, sleeping arrangements, fires, snakebites, kids, dogs, motorcycle, ATV or 4 wheel drive injuries, lost geocachers, gunshots, sore feet, sunburn, blisters, cuts, or broken bones.

Participating in any of the activites are at your own risk.

Whining is stricly prohibited.
