It was a tough hunt this year... strong suspicion that the Cricket Poison not only killed the Sage Grouse off and the Bunnies but the Deer seemed to have Mutant Horns... the DWR believes it to be the case with the Sage Grouse... the Bunnies were in a low cycle or something but they said I was nuts on the Deer... well it was worth a shot...

I hunted the week early on the Disabled Hunt Extensions and saw a few small Bucks and even fired a shot or two at extremely long ranges... but the Tanner Clan smoked a few Bucks this morning... kinda like an old west shootout... but it was fun.

Well I don't know what the DWR guys have been smoking, but the sage grouse, rabbit population, and the poor deer hunt, have a lot more to do with the lack of predator control than a little bit of grasshopper bait.

Whoever it was at the DWR that told you it was grasshopper bait, cannot possibly back up the above claim with any proof or data.

It just irks me when the solution to the problem of plumeting game populations is as obvious as the nose on your face, and the people who can do anything about it won't even consider it to be the problem. It sounds like a bunch of Washington Politicians we all know doesn't it.
It is my belief you can have game animals, or you can have predators, but you will never successfully have both. If you were out in the hills hunting last week or so, then you probably saw at least a couple of coyotes, and maybe some other predators. Well, what do they eat? Grass? Grasshoppers? No, they eat rabbits, sage grouse, and deer. The same is true with Cougars, Wolves, skunks, racoons, magpies, crows, and Oh, gasp, . . . . hawks, owls, and eagles.

Our fathers, grandfathers, and great grandfathers had it right, when they did their best to eliminate all predators. It's just too bad that we didn't learn from them, and get it done in time.
Sorry to all about ranting on, but when I hear or read this nonsense from the people who should know the truth, it just pisses me off. Image

Here's another reason to not leave home without your trusty rifle or side arm.

Saw a few Yotes in the distance but heard them in town quite a few nights yipping away... will have to bring out the decent hardware with the night vision and suppressor and thin them out. Saw tracks of a lone smaller cougar.... lots of crows and one eagle... kinda hard to shoot some of the Predators when a few landowners don't want you to shoot or post no tresspassing signs on every access point.

It shouldn't be the obligation of the Gov or BLM or DNR to control the predators when much of the problem is self inflicted from the limited access... From a Disabled Hunter's view of seeing hundreds of deer in the alfalfa fields... the deer are off limits but if ya see a yote running through the alfalfa field then its okay to shoot it...? uh no.

Oh then you have the public land tied into the CWMU's which the operators allow public access land in other areas of the valley... some of its landlocked or you have to walk to it... not good if your Disabled and the pieces that a Disabled Hunter could actually hunt in the CWMU operators have moved their cows into.... I still consider myself an ethical hunter and will not shoot in a field with cows. I really like Grouse Creek but face it... there are some really colorful folks out there year round.

I came up to Grouse Creek a few years ago with a couple guys and tried to hunt some coyotes. We heard a lot of howling and saw a couple in a private field, but we never called any in and never even got a shot at one.
Does anyone have any ideas for us. We would love to come up there and try it again, but I might need some direction.
I am Floyd Tanner's (the late Floyd Tanner's) nephew. He wasn't with me when I came a few years ago or he could have helped out.
If anyone has any ideas or direction for a successful coyote hunt, please let me know.

Thanks,
Bryan
