My heritage

Postby ctanner@sunfirstbank.com on Mon Sep 17, 2007 1:10 pm

My name is Claine Tanner. I am the oldest and only son of Mervin and Lorna Tanner. We lived in the white frame home at the head of the valley now known as the Box C Ranch. I have a half sister, Norma Jean Hadfield Mecham and a full sister, Tammy Tanner Skenandore. I attended school in Grouse Creek with teachers of Lyman and Eula Kimber. My grade class mates were Sheldon Richins, Sharon Kimber, and Steve Kimber. I graduated from Box Elder High school in 1968 I have eight children, six daughters and 2 sons. Because the Grouse Creek life style was so unique to that of my children I used to tell them bed time stories about my growing up years. My kids are amazed at multiple grades being in one room and no phones and out houses and all of the animal stories. I have reduced most of these stories and experiences to print and find in refreshing to return in memory to those days.

My grandfathers are Valison Tanner and Evan O Kimber. My grandmothers are Harriat Douglas Tanner and Amy Warburton Kimber.
Because of my name, there is hardly a week goes by that I do not meet some one who knows of Grouse Creek. I consider this to be a great heratage.

You guys bring back good memories

I remember well the early summer mornings hauling hay with Claine and Steve Kimber for Bill Thomas. We spent most of the summer doing that for more than one year.
Then in the evenings, we had to play spoons with Jose' (Josie), Tressa Montgomery, Susan Smith, Keith Kimber, and whomever else was around. Some nights we played until it was nearly time to go to work again.
Those were good days, spent well, in our younger years.

My age group got so competitive we broke Hughie and Marge's table so they made us play on the floor from then on. Maybe we should have a spoons tournament sometime to see who is the best. Jason Kimber was talking like he could take anyone but I think there are some out there that could take him.

Wonderful to hear from many of you. I was pleasantly entertained with Chuck Kimbers noting of the hay hauling days and the spoon playing nights. May I add to that that story. As Chuck as indicated he, Steve Kimber and I did work together hauling the Thomas Ranch Hay. Since Steve and I were a little older than Chuck I think that we exercised a little dominion over him. He was the tractor driver. We tried to start early and finish late with a layoff in the heat of the day. We would arrive at Chucks place before daylight and muse ourselves with ways to roust him out of bed. After all when you play spoons all night the morning comes really fast. Upon arriving at the field we could not help but notice what a horrible sight Chuck was with blood shot eyes and tousled hair and his shirt buttoned crooked. At that hour he found no humor in our comments and teasing. When we arrived at the stack with a load of hay Chuck would curl up in the hay and sleep like an old blue healer. Again we would find original ways to rouse him with such tools as the ice cold drinking water or other inventive ways. As the day wore on Chuck would recapture his rest and his disposition improved comensoratly. By the end of the day he was again ready for a nights activity. I must confess that Steve and I also joined in the night and even early morning activitys only to pay for it the next day in the hay fields. Some time I will share with you the time/night that the store was robbed. Guess who was out and about town and became the prime suspects?

So, Claine, We've waited long enough. Tell us about your night time prowlings around Grouse Creek, while the rest of us were asleep in bed, or at Chuck's place playing spoons.
As I recall, Max Tanner was looking for the banditos responsible for breaking and entering at the store. Hmmmm, anything you want to share with us, or "get off your chest". I'm sure the statute of limitations has expired by now, so let's hear the story.

I bet I could tell you about the night the store was robbed. I know who was out and about. ( I am afraid for my life if I tell). Good to hear about some of the fun things that went on.
