Any suggestions as to highlights to explore in the area? Planning a 3-4 day trip to the area to explore some of the old mines and mine camps north of town, would love some suggestions. Thanks! -Kurt ExpeditionUtah.com |

I asked Stephen... he told me that I drove by a few mines quite a few times but they were south of town... I haven't gone in any... looked in a few outcroppings for Native American Burials but thats about it. I have talked to a few old timers out there that have been out looking for cows and have run across the lost Iron Door Mine... an old iron safe door covers the mine and it has been rumored that a couple of stagecoach robbers from up in the City of Rocks in the 1870's had hidden some gold there but the posse killed them while chasing them and never recovered the gold... if you find it ... I want one of the coins okay ? Destiny |

Kurt, Most of the mines north of town are located on Private Property unless you go over by Yost and go to the ones in the Sawtooth National Forest. There is one north of Grouse called the Vipont Mine. This is a mine that has been on the list for Superfund cleanup money for sometime. You might be able to get to it from the Goose Creek road and turn east at Birch Creek. I think the Birch Creek turnoff is just past the Idaho border. This road was also part of the California Trail that came through City of Rocks and the Goose Creek area. There is a marker up the road a bit that is interesting. I can't imagine how difficult it must have been to get those wagons off of that hill. |

Thanks for the leads everyone. I'll keep in touch as we plan out trip. Could be anywhere from 3-10 vehicles coming along with us. |
